Almost at the same time as the “Top 100” seal, Vollherbst won another forward-looking competition: “Printer of the Year 2020” in the Sustainability category. Almost 2,000 readers of the magazine “Druck & Medien” voted on the finalists.

The holistic approach wins

The organisers of the competition, the editorial team of “Druck” magazine & Medien”, compiled a list of 50 nominees at year-end 2020 who had “stood out through outstanding performance”. In December 2020, more than 2,000 readers voted online for the finalists in five categories. The result was published on 15 February 2021: “Readers highlighted that Vollherbst lives sustainability across the entire process chain,” said the editorial team. This means sustainability in economic, ecological and social perspective.

Vollherbst is based in Germany’s warmest wine-growing region, in Baden, and has used solar energy from its own roof for ten years and, more recently, green electricity. Employees train in the in-house gym and enjoy complimentary drinks around the clock. Core processes at Vollherbst have been fully digitalised since 2019: this avoids unnecessary printing and enables the workforce to work from home. The company is also developing alternative, more resource-efficient print finishing processes with various partners, such as EcoLeaf technology, which Vollherbst is the first wine- and spirits-label specialist printer in the world to test.

In the social sphere, Vollherbst supports regional institutions on a project basis, such as Endingen primary school with printers for homeschooling, or the Caritas association in Freiburg with homelessness support during the coronavirus period. Particularly hard-hit areas of the wine industry, of which Vollherbst counts itself a part, are also supported. One example is the South African wine project IMVINI WETHU: together with retailers, Vollherbst created a new wine brand whose entire sales proceeds of EUR 50,000 will flow back to the South African wine industry.

Sustainability is one of the most important topics of the future for us. We feel ourselves to be part of the wine and gourmet industry. Winegrowers, beekeepers and jam makers work directly with nature. As a label manufacturer we feel equally committed to nature and take responsibility for people and the environment.

The “Printer of the Year” award has honoured print products, outstanding companies and individuals in the industry in the German-speaking world since 2018. Vollherbst was already recognised in 2018 in the “Junge Wilde” category: Matthias and his brother Stefan were then placed third. https://bit.ly/3q3wysY
